Vocal Jazz Choir
Concordia Vocal Jazz was formed in the fall of 2006 and has quickly earned a reputation for fine singing of jazz/pop influenced choral music. The choir has performed for high school assemblies throughout the Midwest and at the end of each semester, teams up with the Concordia Jazz Ensemble to perform a Winter and Spring JazzFest.
In the spring of ’08, Concordia Vocal Jazz and the Jazz Ensemble took their first tour through Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. A highlight of the concert tour was an invitation to perform in the historic Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis.
The addition of vocal jazz to Concordia’s choral offerings was designed in part, to help vocal education students become better prepared to teach a greater breadth of choral music repertoire in the schools. Recent concerts have featured performances of music made famous by The New York Voices, The Real Group and Manhattan Transfer. In the winter, the choir performed The “Best of Gene Puerling,” including the famed vocal arranger’s settings of Georgia on My Mind, The Shadow of Your Smile and Button Up Your Overcoat,
Students in the choir are representative of a diverse cross section of academic disciplines from within the university. They are chosen by audition and all are members of the University A Cappella Choir, an internationally acclaimed touring concert choir of 72 members.
