Reconciliation is not an event, but a way of life. Christians often struggle to cultivate lifestyles of reconciliation in our relationships with others. Reconciliation training approaches conflict resolution in a biblical and God-pleasing way.

About the instructor 

Courses in this program are taught by Rev. Mark Rockenbach. Rockenbach serves as the church worker health executive for the Nebraska District-LCMS. He received his B.A. from Concordia College, Seward, Neb.; M.Div. from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.; and M.A. in Counseling from Doane College, Lincoln, Neb. He is currently working on his Ph.D. in general psychology. Mark is a licensed mental health practitioner (LMHP) and also a trained reconciler.

Course descriptions

COURSE ONE

CONFLICT RECONCILIATION: COACHING (EDUC/HS/GERO4/588 - 3 CREDIT HOURS)

This course is an introduction to conflict reconciliation with a focus upon conflict coaching. Students will gain a basic knowledge about what causes conflict including issues of perception and unhealthy or unproductive communication processes. Additionally, students will examine the theological framework for conflict resolution. Students will be challenged to explore their own responses to conflict while learning to coach others through conflicted situations.

* Pre-requisite: Department permission for undergraduates

COURSE TWO

CONFLICT RECONCILIATION: MEDIATION II (EDUC/HS/GERO 4/589 - 3 CREDIT HOURS)

This is an advance study in conflict reconciliation with a focus upon conflict mediation drawn from interpersonal communication theory and skill building. Students will gain basic knowledge about the mediation process in a theological framework. Students will have the opportunity to work through detailed case studies and role-plays based on actual conciliation cases. These studies and roleplays incorporate skills in listening, perception checking and paraphrasing.

Class format

This program consists of two hybrid courses featuring online discussion as well as face-to-face instruction. Each course will include four days in the classroom with the instructor, with online discussions prior to and after the on-campus sessions.

Schedule

Classes will be offered at the following times:

  • Course One: Sept. 1. – Oct. 22; face-to-face meetings are scheduled for Sept. 25 - 28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Concordia's Lincoln campus. (The registration deadline is Aug. 20.)
  • Course Two: Jan. 7 – March 1; face-to-face meetings are scheduled for Jan 28 -31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Concordia's Lincoln campus. (The registration deadline is Dec. 17.)

Academic credit options & cost

  • Non-credit: $250 for the class
  • Graduate Credit: $375 per credit hour ($1,125 for the class)
  • Undergraduate Credt: $395 per credit hour ($1,185 for the class)

Please note: Continuing education units (CEUs) are not available for this class.

The deadline to register for the first course is Aug. 20; deadline to register for the second course is Dec. 17. Students must take the first class to be eligible to take the second.
