Program structure and courses

Special education endorsement - mild/moderate

Graduate students who complete the special education emphasis will demonstrate the following skills, knowledge and dispositions:

  • to prepare educators to identify good, effective reading programs, identify the essential areas of phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, and learn effective ways to assess student skill levels as well as ways to teach reading explicitly and systematically
  • provide educators information about the individual needs of all learners, and practice in identifying those needs
  • to facilitate the development of educators who are able to implement professional standards, advocate for children and youth with exceptionalities and their families
  • to acquire the necessary information to understand the history and development of special education laws and the requirements of these laws in the field of special education
  • to prepare educators to identify good, effective mathematics programs and to evaluate and modify these programs
  • to provide educators with theory, principles and procedures for serving the academic, social and emotional needs of students with learning disabilities
  • to prepare educators to administer formal and informal assessments, including standardized and curriculum-based assessments, as well as to evaluate the results and then use gained information to write an effective IEP, and make appropriate classroom decisions
  • to introduce educators to basic concepts related to definition, identification, etiology, and assessment of persons with moderate disabilities
  • to describe teaching practices for improving the learning, behavior, and other functioning of students with emotional and behavior disorders
  • to demonstrate awareness, knowledge and empathy for exceptional and culturally diverse children

Graduate Level Special Education Endorsement-Mild to Moderate (30 hours) 

This is a program open to teachers interested in adding a mild/moderate special education endorsement to their current teaching certificate.

A Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Special Education can be attained with an additional 12 credit hours:
