Gubanyi is an Audubon Christmas Bird Count coordinator/compiler and a North American Breeding Bird Survey volunteer. He was awarded the National Wildlife Federation 1985-1986 Environmental Conservation Fellowship and was the recipient of the Widaman Trust Distinguished Graduate Student Award from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 1993-1994.
