Profile

Brian Pfoltner received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1995, with a major in trumpet performance, a minor in music theory, and additional emphases in instrumental conducting and composition. Prior to beginning work at the University of Nebraska, he was on the music faculty at Colby Community College in Colby, Kan. He has been a part-time music instructor at Concordia since 1993, directing various ensembles and teaching classes and applied lessons.

From 1993 to 2006 Pfoltner was a member of the nationally recognized music program at First-Plymouth Congregational Church in Lincoln, serving as composer/arranger-in-residence and assistant conductor, and he also played trumpet in the Plymouth Brass. While involved with the group, he wrote and arranged over fifty works for the Plymouth Brass and the Plymouth and Abendmusik Choirs, ranging from brass quintets to hymns and pieces for large brass ensemble, organ and chorus. He also conducted and arranged music for the Plymouth Youth Ensemble, an instrumental group that grew from twelve to more than sixty-five members during his tenure.

In 2006 Pfoltner was appointed Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln. In this position he oversees the entire music program, directs the adult choir and various instrumental groups, and has created a new fine arts series: Arts for the Soul—Music & Fine Arts at First Presbyterian.

Pfoltner has performed with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, the Nebraska Trumpet Ensemble, the Lincoln Municipal Band, and the Third Chair Chamber Players. He is a past conductor of the Lincoln Community Concert Band. His first CD, Light From Out of Darkness, was released in 2007; it contains many of his arrangements and compositions in live performances at First-Plymouth Church.
