The science department at Concordia gave special awards to nine students at its end-of-the year banquet and awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 18. Scholarship recipients and other honorees were announced during the event.

Concordia has announced the recipients of this year’s President’s Scholarships, its most prestigious academic award for incoming students. The renewable scholarship is worth $15,000 a year for a possible total of $60,000 over four years. Recipients of the award meet the highest academic standards, including very high grade point averages and ACT scores of at least 31. In addition, they must maintain grade point averages of 3.5 or higher throughout their college careers.

Twenty-two students gave presentations as part of Concordia’s second annual Student Research Symposium on March 28. Students who had completed research projects as part of class assignments presented on topics including the relationship between lifestyle and self-esteem, ballistics and gunshot testing, and perspectives on education, among others.

A mock arrest was made March 30 at Concordia as students from this year’s Academy for Excellence unraveled a fictional crime mystery pitting a Boy Scout troop leader against Girl Scout cookie sellers.

Nearly 1,000 youth attended the 68th annual Gathering of the Talents hosted by Concordia on Saturday, April 14. Participating students represented numerous Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod churches, elementary and middle schools throughout the Midwest.

About 150 alumni and supporters and 70 students, faculty and staff of Concordia gathered on Saturday, March 24 for the annual Donor Thank You Celebration. The highpoint of the event was the recognition of Dr. Rupert Dunklau. Dunklau received the Sower Award, Concordia’s premier philanthropic award.

Thirty-nine middle school students and their parents will gather on Concordia’s campus for this year’s Academy for Excellence Day on Friday, March 30. Students will participate in educational sessions on crime-solving and will spend the afternoon unraveling their own fictional crime.

Concordia students and faculty once again took part in Brain Awareness Week, sponsored by The Dana Foundation, a private organization that supports brain research. Brain Awareness Week (BAW) is the global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research. Although the official dates for the celebration are March 12-18, Concordia scheduled activities for March 5-11 because of spring break.

Concordia hosted the tenth annual Career and Graduate Fair Feb. 23. The event was a collaboration between Concordia’s career services and the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) organization. Almost 40 vendors and over 140 students participated in this year’s fair.

Lucy Bennett, owner of The Bakery in downtown Seward, Neb., was honored with the Outstanding Woman in Business award at a Concordia luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 15. This ninth-annual event recognized the achievements of female business professionals in the greater Seward community. The luncheon is sponsored by Concordia’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) organization and Concordia Foundation, Nebraska.
