Concordia will recognize five individuals with honorary degrees and awards at its 107th commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, in the Walz Human Performance Complex arena. The degrees and awards celebrate the contributions and service of these individuals to the Concordia University community and the world.

Rev. John Mehl recently joined the Concordia community as the director of mission partnerships and church relations. His role includes developing and nurturing partnerships with churches and districts of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, as well as with national and international missions to encourage mission involvement and opportunities for the campus community.

A team from Concordia competed in the third annual Lutheran Church Extension Fund National Student Marketing Competition April 4 in St. Louis, Mo. This was the university’s first time entering the competition.

Concordia will hold its 107th commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, in the Walz Human Performance Complex arena. A baccalaureate service will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 9, at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward.

Nearly 1,500 elementary and middle school students showcased their talents at the 70th annual Gathering of the Talents festival held at Concordia on Saturday, April 5. Participants and their families traveled from 48 schools across Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and South Dakota.

Concordia celebrated the generosity of its donors with its annual Donor Thank You Celebration on March 22 at the Country Club of Lincoln. Concordia recognized Virginia Hughes as the recipient of its 2014 Sower Award, the university’s premier philanthropic award.

The moon, Jupiter and the Orion Nebula, among other celestial objects, will be the highlights of four open houses at the Osten Observatory at Concordia. The observatory will be open from 8 to 9:30 p.m. on April 6, 7, 8 and 9. Admittance is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Books for kids, teachers, parents and more will be on sale for half price at Concordia’s annual Scholastic book fair. The fair will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday–Wednesday, April 7–9, and from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in room 113 of the Thom Leadership Education Center on the Concordia campus.

International journalist Frank Csongos spoke at Concordia on March 27 in the Thom Leadership Education Center auditorium. Csongos, a former bureau chief with United Press International and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, shared his journalism experiences, which range from some of the most significant world events of recent decades to interviews with comedian Rodney Dangerfield and artist Andy Warhol.

Five area couples opened their homes to the community as part of the 19th annual Scholarship Parade of Homes on Sunday, Dec. 8. The event, sponsored by Concordia University, Nebraska and Jones National Bank, raised scholarship dollars for high school seniors in Seward County who will attend Concordia University in Seward or Southeast Community College in Milford.
