Joshua Smith, a member of Concordia’s Department of Art, presented his first faculty art exhibition this fall. The exhibit, titled “Traces of Place: Recent Sculpture by Joshua Ray Smith,” was open throughout the month of October.

The Concordia Alumni Association honored five individuals and four couples as part of its 2013 Homecoming and Alumni Reunion celebration, Oct. 11-13. The awards are given each year to recognize the service and accomplishments of alumni and others associated with Concordia.

Concordia University, Nebraska’s total student enrollment number for 2013-14 is the largest in its 120 year history. As of the official census date on Sept. 27, a total of 2,206 full- and part-time students were registered, an increase of 115 students over last year’s number.

Honoring lives lost too soon is the purpose of the Children’s Memorial planned for Seward, Neb. More than two thirds of the $120,000 estimated cost has been raised for the memorial prayer garden that will be created on the northwest edge of Concordia University, Nebraska’s campus. Construction is set to begin in late summer 2014.

A dedication of a massive mosaic, entitled “Lightfall,” took place in the Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg Welcome Center at Valparaiso University this Saturday, Sept. 28. The Center for Liturgical Art at Concordia University, Nebraska created and installed the mosaic, which stands 31-feet long by 16.5-feet tall. The title of the mosaic was inspired by Psalm 36:9 and Valparaiso’s motto: “In luce tua, videmus lucer,” “In your light, we see light.”

Nearly 10,000 children and adults from across the Midwest celebrated reading as part of the 18th annual Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival Sept. 26-28 on the Concordia University, Nebraska campus. The festival connected youth and adults with nationally acclaimed authors and illustrators to encourage literacy and education.

The art department at Concordia invites elementary students to participate in Saturday morning art sessions. The sessions, taught by Concordia students majoring in elementary education, encourage youth in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade to learn about and create art.

Concordia’s Handbell Choir performed as part of the first-ever virtual handbell ensemble in September. A total of 440 bell ringers from 26 states and six countries recorded sound clips of the composition “Misterium” by James Meredith. The clips were then merged into one performance.

Concordia University, Nebraska moved up three spots in U.S. News & World Report’s College Rankings 2014 edition in the “Best Regional Universities—Midwest” category making it the 11th consecutive year Concordia has been ranked in the top tier of the annual report.

Concordia University, Nebraska has announced this year’s Presidential Scholars, recipients of its top financial award. The scholarship recognizes incoming students with outstanding academic performance, high test results and well-rounded extracurricular activities.

Ten Concordia Nebraska taught English and American culture to students in grades kindergarten through eighth at Buena Vista Concordia International School for three weeks this summer. BCIS is located in Shenzhen, China, and is the first school in mainland China sponsored by the The Lutheran Church--Hong Kong Synod.

Concordia’s LAUNCH for new students, part of the orientation program at the university, took place Aug. 23-25. The weekend was designed to help students get to know each other, the Concordia community and Seward while settling in to their new campus homes.

Concordia University, Nebraska’s premier vocal ensemble, the University A Cappella Choir toured Europe, performed in Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. The 24-day tour began May 11 and concluded June 3.
