Don Robson, chair of the art department at Concordia, was presented with the 2014 Outstanding Teaching Award at the university’s commencement ceremony on May 10. The honor is given to a full-time faculty member who has been nominated by students and selected by a committee of students and faculty members who have previously received the award. The recipient’s name is not revealed until it is called during commencement.

Concordia awarded more than 240 degrees to May graduates during its 2014 commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 10. Graduates from August and December 2013 were also invited to participate in the commencement ceremony.

The class of 1964 reunited for its 50th anniversary May 8-11 as part of Concordia's commencement activities. The class of 1964 led the commencement processional on May 10 and were recognized during the ceremony.

The Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival has been selected by the State Farm Youth Advisory Board as one of 200 finalists out of 4,000 submissions to receive a $25,000 grant. The festival has through May 16 to rally votes of support through the State Farm Neighborhood Assist Facebook application, which can be accessed at Individuals are allowed up to 10 votes per day.

The Department of Natural Sciences at Concordia recognized exceptional work and contribution to the science department at its 13th annual awards banquet. Graduating seniors were also honored at the banquet.

The Nebraska Omega Lambda chapter of Alpha Psi Omega, a national theater honor society, inducted five new members this spring. The society recognizes student involvement in theater arts programs.

Concordia recently inducted four students into the Iota Nu chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda. The students were inducted into the national music honor society at the university’s spring honor recital.

Concordia held its 107th commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, in the Walz Human Performance Complex arena. A baccalaureate service was at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 9, at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward.

Concordia partnered with area fourth-graders to plant a tree April 24 in honor of the University A Cappella Choir’s 75th anniversary and Arbor Day. Concordia also received the “Friend of Tree” award from the Seward Tree Board for its on-campus arboretum.

Concordia students will begin using iPad tablets in nearly all teacher education program courses starting with the fall 2014 semester. All but the entry-level education course will require use of an iPad.

The University Concert Band and Brass Ensemble gave a joint concert at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 28, at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. Then, the Spring JazzFest opened at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2, in the Weller Hall auditorium. Finally, the Concordia Handbell Choir and Handbell Choir II performed a concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, in the Music Center’s recital hall. All concerts were open to the public at no charge.

Concordia recognized five individuals with honorary degrees and awards at its 107th commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, in the Walz Human Performance Complex arena. The degrees and awards celebrate the contributions and service of these individuals to the Concordia University community and the world.

Rev. John Mehl recently joined the Concordia community as the director of mission partnerships and church relations. His role includes developing and nurturing partnerships with churches and districts of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, as well as with national and international missions to encourage mission involvement and opportunities for the campus community.

Thirteen senior artists have work on display in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Thesis exhibition at Concordia. The show opens April 22 in the Marxhausen Gallery of Art on the Concordia campus. An opening reception is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, with a gallery talk at 2 p.m.

A team from Concordia competed in the third annual Lutheran Church Extension Fund National Student Marketing Competition April 4 in St. Louis, Mo. This was the university’s first time entering the competition.

Music filled the air this spring as four ensembles from Concordia performed end-of-the-semester concerts. On Sunday, April 27, the Male Chorus and Women's Chorale performed at St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward. On Monday, April 28, the University Concert Band and Brass Ensemble performed at St. John Lutheran Church, also in Seward.

Nearly 1,500 elementary and middle school students showcased their talents at the 70th annual Gathering of the Talents festival held at Concordia on Saturday, April 5. Participants and their families traveled from 48 schools across Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and South Dakota.

A student-led drama, "The Gospel Mime," told the Easter story through a silent theatrical production April 14-15 in the Weller Hall auditorium on the Concordia campus.
