MGOLF: Bulldogs finish 11th at NWU Invite

The Concordia University, Nebraska men's golf team had a 36-hole total of 650 for 11th place at the Nebraska Wesleyan Spring Invite in Lincoln, Neb. The Bulldogs also had squads compete in a pair of other meets during the week.
Held Thursday and Friday, the 13-team tournament was played at the par 72 Highlands Golf Course and Holmes Golf Course. The tournament was scheduled to conclude at Pioneers Golf Course, but a sprinkler malfunction left the course icy and unplayable on Friday, so the meet was moved to Holmes.
Concordia had efforts of 320 and 330. The Bulldogs were 12th after the first 18 holes and finished in 12th.
Midland Lutheran took the team title with two-day total of 605 while Buena Vista University was second with a 610. The host of the meet, defending NCAA Division III champion, Nebraska Wesleyan was third.
Midlands Justin Zebolsky was the medallist with a two over par 146 (76-70).
For the Bulldogs, sophomore Steffan Shelemy tied for 37th place with teammate Mike Kulzer with a 161.Shelemy shot a three over 75 on Thursday but struggled with an 86 on Friday. Kulzer was consistent shooting an 81 and 80 respectvely.
Freshman Gil Russel, of Grant, Neb., was next in the clubhouse with a 39th place tie (162/84-78).
Rounding out the lineup at the NWU Invite was freshmen John Zilm (T-63rd/172) and Adam Kusmierczak (65th/173).
Earlier in the week the Bulldogs sent a squad to compete at the SCC Invite and the Midland Invite. The JV squad placed eighth at the SCC invite and ninth the Midland meet. Garrett Rathke turned in a pair of impressive performances, finishing in a tie for ninth at the SCC Invite with a 161 (75-86) and taking fifth place at Midland with a 76. He currently leads the team in average (79).
The next action for Concordia is on April 9-10 as they travel down the interstate to Hastings Invite. The only home action of the season come on April 21, as the second day of the Blue River Classic is played at the Seward Country Club. The first round of the Blue River Classic, a new tournament hosted in partnership with Doane College, will be played on Friday, April 20 in Crete, Neb.
