Concordia earned a 72-62 win over Concordia University-Ann Arbor on Friday afternoon at the Concordia Invitational Tournament. It was the ninth straight win for the Bulldogs, who improved to 17-6 on the year.
Concordia-Ann Arbor held the lead for a good portion of the first half. The Cardinals led by as many as five in the first 20 minutes, but the Bulldogs scored the final six points of the half. A 3-pointer by Sam Huebner gave Concordia a 32-29 lead heading into halftime.
The Bulldogs built a 44-31 lead with a 12-2 run to start the second half. Concordia continued to pour it on and led by double digits the rest of the way. The Cardinals were unable to mount a rally. The Bulldogs led by as many as 18 in the second half and settled for the 72-62 victory.
Concordia was 22-of-48 from the field for 45.8 percent in the win. The Bulldogs connected on 5-of-15 from behind the three point line and were 23-of-34 at the foul line for 67.6 percent. Concordia-Ann Arbor was just 18-of-52 from the field for 34.6 percent. The Cardinals were 4-of-17 from three point land for 23.5 percent and 22-of-27 from the free throw line for 81.5 percent.
Three players scored in double figures to lead the way for Concordia offensively. Sam Huebner paced the Bulldogs with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Tyler Byrd and Ryan Railey each scored 12 points and connected on two 3-pointers apiece for the Bulldogs. Porter Birtell added nine points and seven rebounds. Brandon Schmidt scored eight points, while Dustin Weber poured in seven points for Concordia in the win.
Rocko Holmes scored a game high 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds for Concordia-Ann Arbor. Marius Williams added 17 points for the Cardinals.
The Bulldogs face the winner of Friday evening’s contest between Concordia-Chicago and Concordia-Wisconsin in the CIT championship game on Saturday. Concordia is looking to win the CIT for the second straight year. The tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Mequon.
