Concordia University earned a 73-66 win over Westminster on Wednesday in the consolation game of the Tom Byron Classic Tournament. The Bulldogs improved to 9-6 on the year with the win. The Titans dropped to 2-8 with the loss.
Concordia led by as many as 10 on two separate occasions in the first half and took a 35-28 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs extended the lead early in the second half and led by as many as 17 at 61-44 with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. The Titans attempted to rally late in the contest, but Concordia held on for the 73-66 victory.
Concordia was 22-of-59 from the field for 37.3 percent. The Bulldogs were 10-of-25 from the three point line for 40 percent and 19-of-26 from the charity stripe for 73.1 percent. Westminster was 25-of-62 from the field for 40.3 percent in the loss. The Titans went 5-of-16 from behind the three point line for 31.3 percent and 11-of-13 from the free throw line for 84.6 percent. Both teams totaled 38 rebounds in the contest.
Four players scored in double figures to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Bulldogs. Porter Birtell had a double-double with a game-high 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Tyler Byrd added 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Ryan Railey scored 10 points, and Ryan Shrum delivered 11 points off the bench for the Bulldogs in the win. Tyler Byrd was named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts in the two-day tournament.
Ryne Murray scored 17 points and pulled down 10 boards to lead the way for Westminster. Rob Briggs scored 15, Max Spinner had 11 and Ron Martino added 10 points for the Titans.
