Westmont College pulled away for an 86-66 win over Concordia in the opening round of the Tom Byron Classic Tournament on Tuesday evening.  The Warriors improved to 6-2 on the year with the win, while the Bulldogs dropped to 8-6 on the year with the loss. 

Westmont jumped out to an early lead, and the Bulldogs had difficulty slowing the Warriors down.  Westmont led by as many as 13 on several occasions in the opening half and took a 40-27 lead into the halftime break.  The Warriors came out on fire once again in the second half.  Westmont led by as many as 23 in the final half and cruised to the 86-66 win. 

Westmont connected on 35-of-61 shots from the field for 57.4 percent.  The Warriors were 9-of-18 from three point land for 50 percent and 7-of-11 from the charity stripe for 63.6 percent.  Concordia hit 22-of-64 shots in the contest for 34.4 percent.  The Bulldogs were 7-of-22 from behind the arc for 31.8 percent and 15-of-22 at the free throw line for 68.2 percent. 

Five players scored in double figures for Westmont in the win.  Blake Bender scored 18, and Andrew Schmalbach added 16 for the Warriors.  Matt LeDuc scored 15, Dan Rasp had 12 and Christopher had a double-double of 10 points and 11 assists for Westmont.  Concordia was led by Tyler Byrd’s 18 points.  Sam Huebner added 13 points and a team-high eight boards for the Bulldogs. 

Concordia will take on Westminster College in the consolation game on Wednesday.
