Concordia University earned a 77-69 men’s basketball win over Hannibal-LaGrange in the final game of the 2009 Cattle Classic Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Seward. The Bulldogs improved to 4-3 on the year with the win. The Trojans dropped to 2-3 on the year with the loss.
Concordia hit 20-of-57 shots in the game for 35.1 percent. The Bulldogs were 9-of-22 from behind the three point line and 28-of-42 from the foul line. Hannibal-LaGrange connected on 25-of-55 shots for 45.5 percent. The Trojans were 3-of-11 from the three point line and 16-of-20 from the free throw line on the day.
The Trojans held a 34-16 advantage in point in the paint. Hannibal-LaGrange also had 10 fast break points compared to just two for the Bulldogs. However, Concordia held a 43-33 rebounding advantage and a 17-10 advantage in second chance points in the win.
Tyler Byrd had a game-high 20 points to lead the way for Concordia. Byrd went 7-of-11 from the field and hit 3-of-4 from the foul line on the day. Dustin Weber added 13 points, while Sam Huebner added a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Brian Gilbert had a team-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds for Hannibal-LaGrange. Josh Boswell and Gerell Wells each had 13 points, and Brock Webber added 11 points for the Trojans.
The Concordia men finished as the Cattle Classic Tournament Runner-up with a 1-1 record. York College was the Tournament Champs with a 2-0 record, and Hannibal-LaGrange was third with a record of 0-2.
Following Saturday’s game, the All-Tournament Team was announced. Tyler Byrd and Sam Huebner were selected as Concordia’s representatives. Byrd had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists against York College on Thursday and added 20 points against Hannibal-LaGrange on Saturday. Huebner had 17 points and nine rebounds against York College and added 13 points and 14 rebounds against Hannibal-LaGrange.
Justice Nall and Corey Standerfer of York College and Brian Gilbert of Hannibal-LaGrange were the other players selected to the All-Tournament Team. Nall was named Tournament MVP after posting back-to-back double-doubles in the two York College wins this weekend.
