Concordia University earned a 13-2 victory over Dana College on Saturday afternoon in Blair. The Bulldogs improved to 3-6 on the year, while the Vikings remained winless at 0-10 overall and 0-9 in the GPAC.
The Bulldogs got on the board late in the first quarter. Following an interception by the Concordia defense, quarterback Kyle Schmidt connected with Nate Sindt on a 31-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs the early 6-0 lead. The extra point attempt was blocked.
The score remained the same until the middle of the fourth quarter. Concordia’s TJ Shirey was sacked in the end zone for a safety, and the Vikings pulled within four at 6-2.
After the teams traded possessions, Concordia put the game away with less than a minute remaining. Bulldog defensive end Kyle Kapels picked off a pass and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown. Curtis Miller added the extra point for the final score of 13-2.
Dana finished the game with 235 yards of total offense compared to 158 for Concordia. The Vikings totaled 164 passing yards to go along with 71 rushing yards. The Bulldogs had 91 yards on the ground with just 67 yards through the air on the day. The Concordia offense struggled to get much going, but the defense stepped up in a big way. The Bulldogs forced five turnovers and held Dana to just 4-of-18 on third-down conversions.
Kyle Schmidt completed 4-of-14 passes for 83 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Bulldogs. TJ Shirey completed 1-of-3 passes for 20 yards and also rushed for a team-best 38 yards in the win. Nate Sindt caught two passes for 51 yards and a touchdown, and Daniel Uden added a 40-yard reception for the Bulldogs.
Jerrod Fleming had an impressive day to lead the Concordia defense. Fleming totaled 11 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, an interception and a sack on the day. Daniel Crowe added six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble, while Kyle Kapels, Alex Neiderklein and Preston Harris added interceptions for the Bulldogs in the win.
Brady Quarry completed 14-of-30 passes for 204 yards with three interceptions for Dana College. Mark Schlueter, one of the best receivers in the conference, caught eight passes for 99 yards for the Vikings in the loss. Nate Weathers made seven tackles with three tackles for loss and two sacks to lead Dana defensively.
Concordia hosts No. 19 Hastings College on Nov. 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Senior Day at Bulldog Stadium.
