MTEN: Bulldog men looking to make noise in 2009

Article Body

The Concordia University men's tennis team will look to improve on a 5th place GPAC finish from the 2008 season. Standing in their way will be strong Nebraska Wesleyan and University of Sioux Falls teams, along with multiple other improved GPAC teams.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the players develop throughout the season," said head coach Amy Harms. "The addition of two solid freshmen in (Jeremy) Jank and (Ryan) Duerr will increase the level of competition within our team and make us a stronger team overall."

In addition to a challenging GPAC schedule, the non-conference matches will test the Bulldogs as well. They open with William Jewell and then travel to Kansas for three matches, including one against Bethany College, who is undefeated in the KCAC and had a national tournament appearance last season. At the end of March the men will look to repeat as CIT champions in St. Louis.

The Bulldogs only loss of a team member was the graduation of Travis Sherman who played the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles position for Concordia. Concordia has added freshman Jeremy Jank and Ryan Duerr with high expectations for both. Jank is expected to compete for the No. 1 singles position with returner Jon Schleicher. Scott Schlesinger and Marcus Herring solidify a deep Bulldog returning roster from 2008 that finished 5-8 overall and 3-4 in the GPAC.
