A 16-5 run by Briar Cliff to begin the game was too much for the Concordia men's basketball team to overcome Sunday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa. Concordia took a 76-73 loss to the Chargers, all the Bulldog comeback bids falling short.
After jumping out to a 16-5 lead six minutes into the game, Briar Cliff would push its advantage to as many as 17 points en route to a 43-28 halftime lead.
The Chargers held on to a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half until Concordia was able to cut that down to five multiple times. Each time the Bulldogs would cut into the lead, however, the Chargers responded. The closest the Bulldogs would get to was three points when Tyler Bredehoeft hit a 3-pointer at the final buzzer.
Bredehoeft led all Concordia scorers with 22 points, 14 of those coming in the second half. Ryan Shrum added 19 points and Dustin Weber added 13 for the Bulldogs. Five players hit double digits for Briar Cliff with Kyle Semperini leading the way with 20 points.
The loss, the third in the row for the Bulldogs, drops Concordia to 4-1 in the GPAC and 10-4 overall. The win moves Briar Cliff to 5-1 in the GPAC and 13-3 overall.
Concordia returns home to play Wednesday, Jan. 7, when the Bulldogs welcome the Hastings College Broncos to the Doghouse. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
