MSOC: Bulldogs, Cougars play to stalemate

Article Body

The Concordia University men's soccer team showed its tenacity and a flair for the dramatic in a 4-4 tie with the University of Sioux Falls Cougars Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb.

Aaron Skipworth began the scoring with goals in the 3rd and 15th minutes as the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Sioux Falls got a goal in the 38th minute from Francis Fosu to cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1 going into  halftime.

The Cougars kept their momentum rolling as Cody Lutes scored on a penalty kick in the 47th minute to tie the game at 2-2. The Bulldogs retook the lead as Skipworth finished off the hat trick with an unassisted goal in the 55th minute to give Concordia the lead 3-2.

Sioux Falls then tied and took the lead late in the game with goals in the 70th minute by Jacob Shoup (assisted by Cole DeBoer) and the 83rd minute by Ryan Trupe. Things looked grim for the Bulldogs as Sioux Falls just needed to kill seven minutes to escape with a victory.

The Bulldogs then turned up the offensive pressure and forced the Cougars to foul Skipworth just outside the box with just six seconds remaining on the scoreboard. Concordia sent all available players, including goal keeper Alex McKamy, to the front of the net. Enough players were able to cause a distraction as George Lara Jr.'s perfectly placed free kick was able to find the back of the net to send the game into overtime.

Neither team could mount an offensive rush during either of the overtime periods as the game ended in the 4-4 tie.

The tie means the Bulldogs will enter the GPAC post-season tournament as the No. 7 seed with a record of 5-9-2 overall and 4-5-2. They will travel to Sioux Falls for a rematch with USF on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m.
