Concordia University women's basketball coach Drew Olson announced that Megan Schmidt, a forward for Seward High School who graduated in May, has signed a letter of intent to join the Bulldogs.
Schmidt was a three-year all-conference performer for the Bluejays: she earned honorable mention honors as a sophomore, was named to the second team as a junior and was an honorable mention selection as a senior. Schmidt also has close ties to Concordia athletics. Her father, Grant Schmidt, is Concordia's athletic director and head men's basketball coach.
"I am thrilled to have Megan join the Concordia program," said Olson. "I have known her and her family for many years. She is one of the nicest people you could meet and comes from great parents rich with Concordia tradition. Megan has loads of potential."
Olson is particularly impressed with Schmidt's defensive play. "She was arguably one of the best defensive players in the state last season, said Olson, "and one of the most intelligent players I have seen.
"She is extremely competitive and driven to succeed. With her athleticism, work ethic, and understanding of the game, I believe Megan will be a great asset to the Concordia women's basketball program over the next four years."
Schmidt will join a Bulldog team that finished the 2007-08 season in the quarter-finals of the NAIA Division II National Tournament and a No. 10 ranking in the final NAIA Poll.
