Emergency-related items for residence hall rooms

One regular (corded) phone is required for each resident hall room

In order to facilitate communication, especially during an emergency, each resident hall room at Concordia is required to use a corded phone with the phone outlet and local number provided through the university. (Concordia's phone system is connected to a generator so that corded phones will assist communication during power outages.)

A cordless telephone is not allowed as a substitute. The phone in use must work even when electricity is otherwise unavailable in a dorm room and, unfortunately, the base unit of a cordless telephone does not transmit when there is no power.

Please note that having a cell phone also does not fulfill the requirement. While cell phones can be helpful in the case of emergencies, a basic hard-wired phone using a Concordia-assigned number provides important advantages for managing emergency communication.

A flashlight and extra batteries are recommended

A flashlight and extra batteries that are easy to find in the dark can be the most essential tools during a power outage. Keep several flashlights handy at all times.

A battery-powered radio is recommended

If the power outage is widespread or associated with other emergency situations, a battery-operated radio may provide regular updates.
