2005 Wind Ensemble tour - Pacific Northwest

Concert Band tours the Northwest

Concordia's Concert Band toured the Northwest from March 3-15, 2005, giving performances in seven states.

Concerts began with Morton Gould’s well known and exciting “American Salute”, which is based on “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.” The featured piece of the first half was Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” a perennial crowd-pleaser. The soloist for “Rhapsody” was Julie Klinge, an award-winning student pianist.

The second half of the concert followed a religious theme. It began with “Jericho,” a graphic description in sound of the biblical city of Jericho, the battle, and the ensuing celebration after its capture. The band will then play two pieces based on hymns, “There is a Balm in Gilead” and “Be Thou My Vision.” The concert concluded with the tour-de-force, “In The Spring, At The Time When Kings Go Off to War” by well-known composer, David Holsinger. This piece is a stunning portrait in sound of the biblical text from I Chronicles 20:1-3. The piece dynamic piece is a depiction in sound of King David’s siege of Rabbah, his seizure of the Ammonite King’s jewel-encrusted crown and the triumphal return of David’s army to the walls of Jerusalem.
