Freshman Academic Advisor

Position Summary:  This position's primary responsibility is working with freshman students, building a network of relationships and experiential opportunities to bond students with the institution and to provide a successful academic experience.  The secondary focus of this position is developing programs and strategies related to freshman experiences, first year experiences and sophomore slump initiatives.

Classification:  Administrative, Full time, 12 months, with benefits.

Reports To:  Provost

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred - relevant to position.
  • Experience in a higher education.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records.
  • Knowledge of student retention issues.
  • Knowledge of FERPA guidelines helpful.
  • Ability to explain catalogue requirements to students.
  • Knowledge of academic standards governing athletic eligibility and student probation, suspension and/or expulsion.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, prepare reports.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.

General Duties:

  • Contact all confirmed incoming freshmen.  This process includes advising with the registration process and orientation to initial academic planning and advising services.
  • Answer new student/freshman inquiries and resolve problems related to curriculum and course prerequisites, referring to on-line catalogue, written course descriptions, and other appropriate sources.
  • Continue on-going advisement for freshman students, assisting with second semester registration of classes.
  • Connect students with campus resources such as counseling, academic support, ADA, and tutoring, that they might need as they transition to campus life.
  • During the process of formulating academic plans for freshmen, use available resources to help students identify strengths, interests, skills and talents to focus plans toward identifying a major in collaboration with the Career Development Office.
  • Transition freshmen students to regular faculty advisors at the end of freshman year.
  • Initiate course add/drop and withdrawal actions on behalf of freshmen students, communicating with academic support services, financial aid, and program directors as appropriate to assure high quality decision making.  (Must be able to understand Financial Aid, Athletic and Academic eligibility standards along with catalogue changes.)
  • Support the SOAP process by making contact with freshman advisees that are identified through this process and following up with faculty as needed.
  • Assist in the development of academic plans for freshmen; acquaint them with advising materials such as four year academic plans, the university catalogue and other resources, including Banner Self-Service, for degree evaluations and Blackboard training.
  • Administer surveys, collect data and follow up with student the first week they are on campus.
  • Meet with faculty and students to provide intervention for at-risk students.
  • Use Banner Advising Tracker to track information pertaining to students.
  • Participate in departmental and campus-wide committees related to student success and institutional accreditation as requested.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate summer student success programs, and first year programs in collaboration with Admission and faculty.

Academic Resource Center Manager

Position Summary:  This position implements and evaluates services for the Academic Resource Center in support of successful student academic experience in collaboration with the Coordinator of ADA and Academic Support Services.

Classification:  Administrative, Full-time, 9 months, with some benefits.

Reports To:  Coordinator of ADA and Academic Support Services

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in area relevant to position.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a post-secondary setting preferred.
  • Experience designing and working with tutorial programs
  • Ability to read, write and speak fluent English.
  • Familiar with at-risk student characteristics.
  • Willingness to work with students to improve academic performance.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people.
  • Proven organizational ability.
  • Proven ability to manage and organize a team of individuals.
  • Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) background and/or values aligned with the LCMS.
  • A passion for what Concordia University does and a belief in the University's mission and vision.

General Duties:

  • Under general direction by the Coordinator of ADA and Academic Support Services, coordinate and maintain the daily operations of the Academic Resource Center (ARC), to provide an open caring environment that encourages student learning.  Ensure the ARC tutor schedule provides sufficient open hours and staff to met campus needs and assure that the area is staffed and supervised appropriately.
  • Meet weekly with students who are conditionally admitted or on academic probation to develop a plan that encourages strategies to support successful study habits, time management and problem solving techniques.  Student use of plans will be monitored after the plan is developed to ensure services are utilized for student success.
  • Assist students requesting help by either drop-in visits, appointments, or study groups by providing effective tools in the areas of academic skills and specific content area competencies, i.e. writing labs, math or science labs, or specifically designed labs based on assignments given by instructors.
  • Help connect students with other campus resources pertaining to individual needs (e.g. counseling or career services).
  • Recruit, select, train, supervise and evaluate ARC peer tutors.  Facilitate organizational and training sessions for ARC tutors each semester.  Update and post the ARC tutor list at the start of each semester.  Maintain accurate ARC tutor employment records and assure timely submission of data and reports.
  • Facilitate organizational/training sessions for ARC tutors each semester.
  • Teach tutorial methods to Peer Tutors in a broad area of academics.
  • Work with ADA Coordinator to assure provision of test accommodations for students with verified disabilities.
  • Work with the Coordinator of ADA and Academic Support Services to implement services outlined in the strategic plan.
  • Participate in departmental and campus-wide committees related to student success and institutional accreditation as requested.
  • Research and develop the Academic Resource Center website information in collaboration with the Coordinator of ADA and Academic Support Services.

Assistant Director of Student Life Office

Position Summary:  Under the direction of and in collaboration with the Director of Student Life, assists with the planning, administration, and programming of the Student Life Office.  This includes working for the safety and security of students; developing programs to intentionally build a living, learning community on campus; providing students opportunities for experiential learning activities as they live, lead and serve; and facilitating appropriate interventions in student conduct issues for holistic student development, maintaining Christian community standards and protecting the institution's best interests.  This position will also oversee matters related to campus/student housing procedures and assignments.

Reports To:  Director of Student Life Office

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in appropriate area.
  • Masters Degree in Higher Education Administration preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience in administration of college age students.
  • Counseling experience would be helpful.
  • Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, cultures and their history and origins.
  • Knowledge of different philosophical systems and religions.  This includes their basic principles, values, ethics, ways of thinking, customs, practices, and their impact of human culture.
  • Ability to tell when something is wrong or likely to go wrong.  Involves recognizing the problem.

General Duties:

   RA Training and Supervision

  • Assist the Director of Student Life with the hiring and supervising of the residence hall staff, including selection, training, evaluation and ongoing development.
  • Assist with residence hall staff networking and in-service through meetings and activities with RAs and RCs.

   Professional Growth

  • Participate in ongoing continuing education as it relates to student development and residence life administration

   Resident Relations

  • Provide individual assistance and personal counsel to students; help students with their adjustment to living in the residence halls.
  • Connect with a variety of students on campus for the purpose of developing good rapport with the Student Life Office; attend and participate in campus functions (e.g. chapel, athletic events, fellowship, social activities, etc.)
  • Assist with communication and education of resident students about policies, programs, deadlines and general information; primarily responsible for updates to the Student Handbook.
  • Assist with providing service and leadership opportunities for student growth/development within the living learning environment of the residence halls.
  • Assist with the updating of the residence/student life web site with accurate, timely and informative content.

   Student Reconciliation & Student Conduct Board

  • Assist the Counseling Office in crisis interventions by becoming involved with incidents when deemed necessary by the Director of Counseling Services
  • Assist in student retention by participating in "early alert" and/or other means of intervening for students "at risk".
  • Serve as a member of the Student Services Council and assist in the Department of Student Services with proposed university student policy development and execution.
  • Assist with the implementation of the Concordia University Student Code of Conduct.  This includes serving as an administrative hearing officer; investigating allegations of conduct violations; meeting with students; formulating appropriate disciple response in accordance with university guidelines; accurate recordkeeping; referring students to appropriate services and overseeing student disciple probation case management.
  • Assist with accurate disciplinary database records.

   Resident Life

  • Assist the Student Life Education Coordinator by providing information regarding campus needs; assist with resources for campus wide educational programs as appropriate through the residence hall staff.
  • As appropriate, work with the Director of Student Activities for outreach, support and community integration. 
  • Serve in the on-call administrative duty rotation with the Director of Student Life.
  • Assist with the processing of maintenance, security and safety concerns in the residence halls.  Help with student emergency training procedures for fire, weather and other health safety issues.
  • Assist the Director of Student Life to develop a strategy for long and short term goals for furniture replacement and enhancement of common area space and resident rooms.
  • Coordinate with the CFO, VP, DoSS, DSL in determining the residence halls for the upcoming academic demographics of the student body to determine where men, women, freshmen, seniors, etc. will be house prior to making assignments.
  • Publicize costs and housing options and answer all inquires from students regarding housing options.
  • Housing:
    • a) Make housing assignments for upperclassman.
    • b) Notify freshmen students of housing assignments; provide roommate contact information; communicate with new students and parents with respect to housing related questions/concerns such as room layout, loft policy, housing codes, etc.
    • c) Make housing assignments for second semester new and transfer students.
    • d) Assist in housing assignments and lease preparations for Kolterman apartments.
  • Provide the DSL with a detailed quarterly housing report and a housing summary at the end of the school year.
  • Work with RAs and RCs to check all students in and out of residence hall rooms; process any moves through the school year.
  • Coordinate with summer camp directors, maintenance department personnel, and the academic calendar to develop a summer housing schedule to facilitate summer school housing, summer camp housing, family reunion housing and conference/events housing needs including hall configurations, assignments, key management, check-in/out, etc.

Vice President of Enrollment, Student Services and Athletics

Position Summary:  This position provides vision, leadership and integration to the University's recruitment, retention, student services, marketing and intercollegiate athletic functions.  This position is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive plan for enrollment, student services, marketing and intercollegiate athletics within the broader vision of providing Concordia's students an excellent, holistic, Christ-centered education as they prepare to serve and lead in church and world.  This position works to ensure quantitative and qualitative measures of excellence are achieved in student recruitment and retention, through the services provided to students, in marketing and in intercollegiate athletics.  This position helps to articulate the University's brand and to position the University with its several publics and constituencies.  The position supports the strategic leadership and direction of the University through collaborative engagement with the University's Cabinet and Board of Regents.

Classification:  FLSA Exempt; Executive/Administrative

Reports To:   President/CEO

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in administration, student services, enrollment management, athletic administration or related field required; Ph.D. desirable, but not required.
  • Five years of successful leadership experience in enrollment management, marketing, organizational management; or higher education administration/leadership preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide results-oriented leadership, including fiscal and personnel management.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, lead and motivate a high achieving team.

  • Determine strategic use of financial assistance in recruitment and retention of students optimizing state, federal and institutional aid.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to a team of professionals in the areas of enrollment, student services, athletics and marketing to ensure quantitative and qualitative measures of excellence are achieved through services provided to students.
    • Articulate the University's brand and position the University with its several publics and constituencies by coaching and guiding the marketing communication team to effectively communicate the University's mission, vision, values and brand.
    • Meet and exceed expected recruitment and retention outcomes by coaching and guiding the recruitment and retention teams through established quantifiable goals.
    • Create a positive and successful campus learning experience by coaching and guiding the student services team to support, care, nurture and develop the whole student and to assure consistency and quality of services provided.
    • Achieve intercollegiate athletic excellence academically and athletically at the conference and national levels.
  • Maintain effective communication and collaboration with other members of the President's Cabinet and administrative and academic departments to ensure fulfillment of university-wide strategies, goals and initiatives.
  • Assist in the development and administration of the budget for assigned areas; direct the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; and monitor expenditures and keep them within university guidelines.
