Head Softball Coach
Position Summary: Under the direction of the Athletic Director, the Head Softball Coach is accountable for the administration, financial management and development of the softball program, and responsible for coaching of the team at Concordia University. This position will manage the resources provided by the University which supports the essential components of the program and is actively involved in fundraising for program enhancements.
The objective of the Head Coach will be to create an environment conducive to the development of student-athletes in a fiscally responsible environment which is consistent with the values of the university and in accordance to its mission which is primarily education.
Classification: Part-time position; possibly full time - dependent on availibility of other job functions and applicant's skills and abilities.
Reports To: Athletic Director (Primary)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in physical education, health or related field or equivalent.
- 3-5 years of experience directly related to the essential functions.
- 2-3 years of experience as an Assistant Coach in Higher Ed or high school head coach preferred.
- Valid driver's license
- Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the softball program.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of athletic recruitment methods and techniques.
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to lead and guide NAIA student-athletes in area of specialty.
- Knowledge of NAIA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student-athletes.
- Skill in budget preparation and management.
- Ability to make administrative/procedural decision and judgments.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
- Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) background and/or values aligned with the LCMS.
- A passion for what Concordia University does and a belief in the University's mission and vision.
Role Expectations:
- Provide leadership in the development of the program to achieve the objectives consistent with the strategic direction of the Athletic Department. (quality and excellence).
- Establish strong relationships with the other university departments, faculties and other groups such as alumni, high schools, leagues, etc.
- Provide guidance and support to the student-athletes to achieve their greatest potential both academically and athletically.
- Financially manage the program consistent with University policy.
- Adhere to the procedures and policies set forth by CUNE, as well as support the centralized promotion and revenue generation initiatives.
Essential Functions:
Program management: Responsible for the administrative, financial and coaching requirements for the program. Specifically:
- Develop, implement and monitor the program's long term development plan which complements the strategic plan of CUNE's athletic department.
- Develop, implement and evaluate the program's annual plan.
- Work with outside sources to complete the program's annual competitive schedule.
- Develop the program's annual facility requirements and submit requests.
- Make travel arrangements for team as necessary.
- Provide necessary information on teams' travel requirements to appropriate AD.
- Select, direct, supervise and evaluate the assistant coaches of the program.
- Work with AD to ensure that the student-athlete eligibility requirements are adhered to, as set out by NAIA, GPAC.
Coaching: Responsible for creating an environment which is consistent with the values of the University and foster the development of the student-athletes in the program. Specifically to:
- Set annual program competitive objectives which will motivate student-athletes to strive for their greatest potential athletically, academically and spiritually.
- Develop, with the assistance of the coaching staff, tools to realize the achievement of the program objectives:
- Annual training and practice plans for the team and individual student-athletes;
- Systems which make the best use of student-athlete talents;
- Game strategies in preparation for each competition;
- Regular evaluation of progress through the review of statistics and other feedback;
- Develop an academic monitoring program for the student-athletes and provide direction for academic counsel where appropriate.
- Model appropriate behavior and attitude for student-athletes, monitoring athlete behavior issues, on an off the court, appropriately dealing with disciplinary issues.
- Coordinate the responsibilities of the assistant coaching staff.
Athlete Recruitment: Responsible for recruiting student-athletes who contribute to the realization of the program objectives academically, athletically and spiritually. Specifically to:
- Develop a recruiting program in consultation with the coaching staff, based on the needs of the program and requirements of the University.
- With assistance from the Admission Office, coordinate recruitment of student-athletes.
- Establish on-going contact with potential student-athletes according to NAIA-GPAC rules.
- Coordinate the efforts of all assistant coaching staff and other recruiters.
- Communicate with the Admission Office and the AD's office regarding students who will be joining the program.
- Develop and implement a plan to assist student-athletes in faith development.
- Establish a communication system with the Retention and Advising department to monitor retention issues with student-athletes.
Financial Management: Accountable for the program's annual operating budget as approved by the AD and Cabinet. Specifically to:
- Prepare an annual budget including details on administration, recruiting, exhibition travel, equipment and team uniform requirements.
- Establish fundraising initiatives and objectives for program enhancement as approved by Advancement.
- Monitor the approved budget on a regular basis.
- Oversee athletic scholarship distribution for the softball area to fit within defined matrix.
- Manage summer camps to fiscally support the team's program.
Communication and Promotion: In consultation with the Marketing office, the Head Coach is responsible for promoting his/her program. Specifically to:
- Respond to requests for information or interviews from the media and the Sports Information Director in a manner that reflects the values of the University.
- Ensure that all promotional materials meet the graphics standards of the University.
- Assist the Sports Information Director and the Marketing office in providing information for the website, home game passes and tickets and other promotional materials.
External Liaison: Responsible for the promotion of the program. Specifically:
- Interact and communicate with external groups, such as: the university community, families of players, sports governing bodies, sports services partners, coaches associations and external community.
- Develop the support of the alumni such as: organization of alumni events, regular communication with alumni and alumni fundraising initiatives.
- Promote his/her program at the University by participating in activities such as: Booster Club, golf tournaments, orientation week, receptions, etc.
- Represent the University and your program at conference and national meetings where required.

Part-time Volleyball Coach or *Graduate Assistant Volleyball Coach Position
Position Summary: This position assists the Head Volleyball Coach with all phases of operating the volleyball program.
Classification: Part-time position
Reports To: Head Volleyball Coach
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in area relevant to coaching.
- Collegiate playing and/or coaching experience preferred.
- Knowledge of NAIA rules and regulations.
- Proficient in game of volleyball.
- Ability to work well with college students.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to manage a team.
- Ability to mentor and encourage student and team success.
- Commitment to Concordia University's Christian values.
- Ability to drive a 12-passengar van.
General Duties:
- Participates and helps plan and lead volleyball practices.
- Helps with player strength and conditioning programs.
- Helps with recruitment of students to the volleyball program.
- Helps with game preparation and statistics, including scouting appointments.
- Other duties as assigned by the head coach.
