Philip Perschbacher, artistPhilip Perschbacher, assistant professor of art at Concordia, recently finished a relief sculpture for the congregation of Christ Memorial Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Mo. Depicting the baptism of Jesus Christ, the sculpture was dedicated on June 8 and hangs near the baptismal font on a wall near the front of the sanctuary.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to create a work of art which enhances the worship space and prepares hearts and minds for worship," said Perschbacher.

The sculpture is plaster with layers of paint and includes representations of God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Perschbacher took his inspiration from St. Matthew's description of the event in the Bible.

The project was commissioned by the Christ Memorial Women's Guild. Ed Luhmann, art director at Concordia Publishing House, and Rev. Bill Simmons, pastor at Christ Memorial, were advisors on the project.
