Article Body

The Concordia University men's basketball team avenged a two-point loss from last week to the University of St. Mary Spires with a 78-69 victory Wednesday night at the Doghouse in Seward, Neb.

The lead changed hands multiple times before Concordia was able to take a four-point lead, 36-32, into halftime.

The Spires kept the Bulldogs close until the 15:10 mark of the second half when Concordia went on a 12-0 run over the next two minutes to extend their lead to 17,57-40, on the strength of baskets by Tyler Bredehoeft, Dusan Veslinovic, and Sam Huebner.

Despite struggling from behind the arc, going just 4-of-16 from three-point range, Concordia did hit 50 percent of their field goal opportunities (28-of-56). The major difference in the game was second chance points as the Bulldogs had 17 while St. Mary's had just two.

Concordia was led offensively by Bredehoeft with 22 points as three other Bulldogs also scored in double digits: Veselinovic (16), Ryan Shrum (13), and Huebner (12). Veselinovic led the Bulldogs on the boards with eight rebounds.

St. Mary's was led by the duo of Carvelle Taylor with 27 points and Mike Sylvara with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

The victory moves the Bulldogs to 5-1 overall while the loss drops St. Mary's to 4-2 overall. The next action for Concordia comes on Nov. 21 as the Bulldogs welcome the York College Panthers to the Doghouse with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
