The Concordia University, Nebraska men's basketball team got off to a 2-0 start on its season at the Cornerstone Classic hosted by York College in York, Neb., this past weekend.
The new-look Bulldogs, starting three newcomers, jumped out to a quick 41-28 halftime lead in their game Friday evening against Mayville State (N.D) and cruised to a 83-67 victory. Sophomore Tyler Bredehoeft hit 5-of-7 three-point attempts and was the scoring leader for the Bulldogs with 23 points. Freshman Tyler Byrd added 19 points.
The Bulldogs returned Saturday afternoon to take on host York College. Concordia won 74-57, but the Bulldogs also struggled through early season growing pains. Concordia sank only 7-of-20 three point attempts and turned the ball over 10 times.
Against York, Bredehoeft again led the Bulldogs in scoring with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field. Senior Dusan Veselinovic was 8-of-18 shooting for a total of 17 points. Sophomore Sam Huebner added 13 points and his eight rebounds led the team.
The Bulldogs' next three games take place on a road swing to Missouri and Kansas. Concordia travels first to St. Louis, Mo., for a game against Concordia Seminary on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs then head to Leavenworth, Kan., to take on St. Mary's on Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday Concordia returns to Hannibal, Mo., for a game against Hannibal LaGrange at 6 p.m.
