Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Department of Natural Science
Health Careers Program
Profile

John C. Jurchen joined the Concordia faculty in 2005 upon completion of an individual NRSA sponsored postdoctoral fellowship in analytical neurochemistry. Dr. Jurchen’s research at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, included constructing state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instrumentation, exploring the gas-phase structure of biological non-covalent complexes, and developing methods for mass spectrometry imaging of nervous tissue. He is currently preparing, with fellow faculty members Dr. Kristy Jurchen and Dr. Brian Albright, to initiate an undergraduate research program in environmental chemistry and modeling. He is also engaged in his passion: sharing God’s love and the wonders of His creation with his students.

Education

Post-doctoral training: University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL (2003-2005)
Ph.D. in Chemistry: University of California, Berkeley, CA (2003)
B.S.Ed. and B.A. in Chemistry: Concordia University, Seward, NE (1997)

Courses taught

Introductory Chemistry; General Chemistry; Organic Chemistry I; Analytical Chemistry; Physical Chemistry I (Thermodynamics & Kinetics); Physical Chemistry II (Quantum Mechanics & Spectroscopy); labs for all of the above

Other

Dr. Jurchen has thus far authored or coauthored 14 peer-reviewed journal articles in Analytical, Physical, and Biological Chemistry. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the Gideons International. He teaches Sunday morning Bible study and plays trumpet weekly at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in nearby Goehner, Neb. He feels very blessed to share both an office and a chemistry teaching ministry with his wife, Dr. Kristy Jurchen.
