Concordia University, Nebraska announced Wednesday night that seniors JaMaine Lewis and Katie Werner have been named as Concordia's athletes of the year for 2007-08.

Lewis, a standout running back from St. Louis, Mo., led the Great Plains Athletics Conference in rushing with 1,256 yards, and he was the only running back in the conference to average at least 100 yards per game (126.5). JaMaine Lewis - 2008 Male Athlete of the Year

A team captain for the Bulldogs in his senior year, other honors for Lewis in his final season included being named to the All-GPAC first team as well as earning second-team all-America honors from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Lewis was also honored by the Omaha World Herald as a first-team selection to their all-state team and was named the team's honorary offensive captain.

A two-time first-team All-GPAC selection, for his career Lewis averaged 5.8 yards per rushing attempt while averaging nearly one touchdown per game. Over four years Lewis had 439 rushing attempts and amassed 2,559 yards and 22 touchdowns.

He was twice named the GPAC offensive player of the week in his last season. The first honor came after gaining 150 yards and scoring two touchdowns in a season-opening victory over Briar Cliff. The second came against Dakota Wesleyan on October 20, 2007; Lewis tallied 261 yards and scored four touchdowns against the Tigers.

During her career at Concordia University, Werner was a standout in both volleyball and track, rewrote multiple school records and collected numerous awards. Werner was one of the most dominate middle blockers in the GPAC. Even though most teams specifically prepared to counter her, Werner nevertheless topped the GPAC in kills and blocks. In track she established herself as one of the premier female throwers in Concordia athletic history over the past four seasons.

Katie Werner - 2008 Female Athlete of the YearWerner was a four-time all-GPAC selection, three time NAIA All-Region III selection, as well as being the team's most valuable player. During her career she was named to 9 different all-tournament teams, she was the GPAC player of the week multiple times and was a two-time NAIA scholar athlete.

During her volleyball career she set three individual records: best attack percentage in a single season (35.6% in the 2006 season); most blocks in one match (17 in a match in 2004); and most blocks in a career (793).

In track she is the current record holder in the indoor shot put and is second on the outdoor shot put list. Werner currently is second on the all-time list for the indoor weight throw and third in the outdoor hammer throw. She has been a two-time NAIA All-American and a three-time NAIA Scholar Athlete.

For her career Werner was a GPAC champion in the shot put and competed at the NAIA national championship meet six times.
