Article Body

The Concordia University women's tennis team picked up a dramatic victory, 5-4 over Bethel College while the men couldn't find a rhythm dropping their match with Bethel 8-1.

The women gained much needed momentum by picking up victories in the number two (Erinn Beckman and Heather Jackson) and number three (Leah Koopman and Jess Svajhart) doubles teams, 8-5 and 8-6 respectively. The number one doubles team of Hannah Kruger and Taylor Cook were defeated 8-3.

Kruger was then quickly defeated in the number one singles, 6-2, 6-0 to tie the match at 2-2. The Bulldogs picked a big victory early when number six single, Kim Francis, won in a tie break, 3-6, 6-3, 10-4. Bethel tied the match when number five single, Koopman, was defeated 6-4, 6-3. After Beckman won in number two singles and Jackson lost in number three singles the match came down to freshman Cook in number four singles.

In the closest match of the afternoon Cook dropped the first set 7-6 in a tie break that went to Bethel's advantage 7-4. Cook regained her composer and took the second set 6-1. The last and final super set came down to who would make the last mistake. Cook twice fought off a match point to tie the match. Cook was able to win her match on a powerful backhand that the Bethel player could not reach giving Cook the final advantage, 19-17.

On the men's side the Bulldogs fell behind quickly and were not able to recover dropping the match 8-1. The duo of Tim Meyer and Scott Schlesinger was the only doubles team to pick up a victory, 8-6. The only other close match of the afternoon came in number one doubles where the team of Jon Schliecher and Marcus Herring were defeated 8-5.

The next action for both the men (3-3, 1-0 GPAC) and the women (5-1, 1-0 GPAC) comes as Midland Lutheran come to Seward for a 4 p.m. duel.
