Article Body

The Concordia men's tennis team was able to ride the momentum from a successful weekend to earn a 7-2 victory over Great Plains Athletic Conference rival Doane College on Tuesday afternoon.

Concordia's weeken was spent winning the Concordia Invitational Tournament in St. Louis, Mo. There the Bulldogs picked up victories over the Concordia Seminary (7-2) and Concordia Chicago (9-0). The Bulldogs dropped a close match to Concordia Wisconsin 5-4 but were able to nudge out CUW for the overall tournament championship by one victory.

While in St. Louis four Bulldogs went undefeated: number two singles, Marcus Herring; number four singles, Scott Schlessinger; number six singles, Travis Sherman; and the number three doubles team of Schlessinger and Tim Meyer.

On Tuesday Concordia took down Doane 7-2 in Crete, Neb. The Bulldogs dropped only one singles match. Concordia's No. 1, Jon Schleicher, took a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Doane's Josh Siske. The Bulldogs made relatively light work of the Tigers in the No. 2, 3, 4, and 5 singles, as Herring, Meyer, Schlessinger, and Kyle Winter all picked up victories. Sherman was then pushed to a second set tie break but was able to put away Doane's Jake Zlatkovsky 6-2 and 5-7 (10-8).

In doubles action the Bulldogs No. 1 doubles team of Schleicher and Herring quickly dispatched Doane's team of Crist and Fye, 8-3. The Concordia No. 2 team of Winter and Sherman were then defeated by the Tiger duo of Siske and Acker 8-4 but by that time the match was well in the Bulldogs' hand. The Bulldogs No. 3 team of Meyer and Schlessinger continued their winning ways by defeating the Doane team of DeWispelar and Zlakovsky 8-6.

The next action for the Bulldogs comes Friday, April 4, as Concordia welcomes Bethel College to Seward, Neb., with the match beginning at 4 p.m.
