The Acting Company, an award-winning repertory theater, will bring its nationally-touring performance of "Moby Dick - Rehearsed" to the Seward High School auditorium on Sunday, March 2. This free performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is the latest event in the Jones National Bank & Trust Company Fine Art Series, a partnership between Concordia University, Nebraska and Jones National Bank & Trust Company. The Seward Fine Arts Council is also a sponsor of this event. While free, tickets are required for the event.
The Acting Company, based in New York City, engages an ensemble of well-trained and talented young actors to perform classic plays and contemporary works. This play is Orson Welles' adaptation of Herman Melville's novel "Moby Dick" and draws parallels between King Lear and Captain Ahab.
"The Acting Company has won numerous awards, including a Tony Award, and Patty LuPone and Kevin Klein are among actors who began their careers with the company," said Dr. Mira Wiegmann, professor of theater arts. "The possibility of having the next generation of professional actors perform in Seward is a wonderful opportunity for our campus and community. We can expect to receive a night of theater that would equal a Broadway performance."
Max Wake, president of Jones National Bank & Trust Company, has been involved in the art series since its inception. "Our intention is to work with the university to make possible visits by national artists who would not otherwise be able to come," he said. "The events bring together not only the faculty and staff at Concordia with our staff, but the entire community has the opportunity to experience these artists. This time we have even expanded the partnership by involving the Seward Arts Council, and we have been working with the high school and their drama program."
Concordia theater students will have the opportunity to work with the cast and crew to set up and run the show at the high school. While the company is in Seward, they will also conduct a workshop on performing Shakespeare for the Concordia students.
"Concordia's theater department will be rehearsing "Measure for Measure" by Shakespeare this spring, and students playing roles in this show will work with The Acting Company to enhance their characterizations," said Wiegmann.
The first Jones National Bank & Trust Company Fine Art Series was begun in 2003 and has included nationally-known composers and conductors. Future events in the series will include theater and art and in addition to musical events.
