Concordia's Chamber Choir recently completed its tour of Arizona and Nevada. From Feb. 7-11 the choir gave concerts at churches, participated in worship services and performed for school assemblies.
The choir's eclectic program included hymns, anthems, spirituals and jazz selections. The highlight of this tour was "Harlem Songs" by American composer Gwyneth Walker. The three anthems in the collection are based on the poetry of Langston Hughes.
"Hughes' poetry is phenomenal and Gwyneth Walker is becoming a prominent American composer," said Dr. Kurt von Kampen, associate professor of music and director of the choir. "We are very excited to be performing this piece. It is very contemporary and contributes to the spectrum of music in the choir's repertoire."
This is the 10th year of the chamber choir; its members are selected from the 70-member University A Cappella Choir, also conducted by von Kampen.
