Wind Ensemble concert season begins

Concordia’s University Wind Ensemble began the 2007-08 performance season with a concert on Oct. 28, at the Seward High School auditorium.

This year the 42-member band added a variety of new selections to its repertoire. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer Leroy Anderson, the ensemble performed “Bugler’s Holiday.” This popular tune features a trumpet trio consisting of students Aaron Schimm, Audrey Herrmann and Micah Korb.

Two other new pieces include “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich and “Canto and Camdombe” by Alfred Reed, a piece based on Brazilian folk music.

The Wind Ensemble is the oldest continuing music group at the university and is conducted by Associate Professor of Music Dr. William Kuhn. The group spent three weeks in China in May, performing in world-class concert halls and offering joint concerts with national ensembles. Their most recent CD is “In the Spring,” released in 2005.
